I've been a Democratic activist my whole life. I have never voted for
a Republican. I do think the party matters and have worked hard to
see that the Democratic platform reflects my values. It is very
different from the Republican platform. Watch the Republican
convention and note how different the make up of the delegates is.
Democrats gave women half the seats decades ago something the
Republicans have yet to do and the delegates remain primarily white males.
By all rights I should be a Hillary supporter (older feminist etc.)
but I got Obama's message from the get go and am so happy he is
bringing people back into the process. I realized quite a while ago
that it was the mean spirited, backbiting dirty campaigning that
turned voters off. Now Obama has elevated the dialogue and all the
standards are improving.
As for Palin glad she helped clean up the dirty Republicans in Alaska
but it hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat from the Presidency.
I also think it is a woman's right to decide if she wants and can
care for a child, disabled or not, it makes no difference. I admire
her decision to have her baby but I would not have faulted her if she
had decided she could not handle it. Martha Beck wrote a best selling
book on this topic called Expecting Adam. We do have to tackle the
problem of how many people are on the planet. We cannot sustain these
numbers. I admire people who decide not to reproduce or who limit
their families. I hope this does not sound harsh. Once people are
here I think we should take better care of them than we do again
whether disabled or not. I can almost see Ken's disgust with my views.
