That is one special house. How does the air circulate through the tubes?
(Same question for Cuyler's rock wall - what "pumps" the air up and down
while cooling or heating?) On another note, wasn't it someone on this list
that quoted someone as saying, "More great architecture has been destroyed
in the name of energy efficiency than any other means."

Leland,
There are several things about this house that don't match the standard
patterns. For cooling in summer and heat storage in the winter the basement
floor slab is poured over a sand bed with an air tube system based on
research done at ATI in Wooster. The sytem was designed to semi-passively
cool sows by circulating air through tubes buried in the barn yard and then
through the air tubes in the floor slabs of the swine houses. It elimated
the need for filtration and keeps the sows cool enough to stay fertile. Our
sytem is deigned to pull air down an extra air duct built into the central
chimney from the highest point in the house. It also allows us to use an air
filter element in the duct.
The water in the house is collected off the roof (as soon as the trim is
finished) and stored in a cistern. It's purified with ultraviolet light and
filtered through a turbidity filter for clarity, After it is used, the
sewage line takes to to standard septic tank that feeds into our constructed
wetlands which is sealed on the bottom so the water is forced back into the
sky through evaporation and evapotranspiration. When completed no water will
come out of the ground water or go back into it. Basically zero impact as
far as water goes.
