I received an interesting inquiry from Australia about historic cemetery
plantings, and forward it with permission. Excerpts from two messages
follow the dots below. If you have any thoughts about this, please copy
your reply to Pat Toolan at [log in to unmask]

Dear Lawrence Kestenbaum, I am studying toward a Churchill Fellowship in
Australia. I have been searching the internet unsuccessfully to find any
legislation which may be in place to save and preserve old plantings such as
original old roses in cemeteries. I am a coordinator for South Australia for
Heritage Roses in Australia Inc which is an organisation committed to the
preservation of the old rose varieties. I am currently compiling an Old Rose
Register of old cemetery, roadside and old garden roses worthy of
preservation for their historic and horticultural significance. I am hoping
to travel overseas on the Fellowship to study how the roses in cemeteries
may be saved. Is there any work being done in this area? I would appreciate
any help. Is there any legislation or groups doing this? I am aware of
Heritage Roses in America and the Texas Rose Rustlers. I look forward to a
direction to persue. Thankyou, Pat Toolan

Dear Lawrence, Thankyou for such a speedy reply and yes please pass my
name and email to anyone/organisation who may be of assistance. Ihave
until the end of February to get the application in for this year. If I
haven't enough details by then I will leave it to next year but that is
another year in which the roses may be lost to us forever.

I'm thinking to get the application in with tentative dates and I believe
the rest will come together over the next 12 months as the travel will be
in the middle of 2002. I have made a copy of the CGN CEMETERY DO'S &
DON'TS which I'd like to pass on to the cemetery where Heritage Roses in
Australia (SA branch) is helping with the maintenence by weeding and
tending the original old rose plantings. Is this OK? Kind regards and many
thanks, Pat Toolan
