Everyone -

NRIS - National Register Information System is the officical database of the
National Register of Historic Places. You can search by state and/or county
from web at:
www.nr.nps.gov/nrishome.htm
The list will contain:
State, County, Name, Address, City, Listed date, Multiple, Reference Number

For the experienced user, the database can be downloaded through FTP - file
transfer protocol (interchange format is dBASEIII Plus) You can download to
further manipulate data.

----------------------------------------------------
Other data sources are in the works, but I'm not sure how helpful it would be
to John Leeke's original question:
Cultural Resource Projects GIS (mapping)
www2.cr.nps.gov/gis/gisproj.htm
Especially check out the National Historicx Landmark, Geographic Information
System project. "The NHL GIS is the first spatially enabled compilationof
geogaphic, historical, administrative and descriptive physical data about the
NHL system. Data sources included existing non-spatial electronic databases,
the NHL paper record files, and original spatial analysis."

Also keep an eye on:

Mapping & Preservation Inventory Tool (MAPIT) Organizing Historic Resource
Inventories for the 21st century.

If you go to the site index for Links to the Past at the Nat'l Park Service
(nps.gov)
you'll find dozens of interesting and informative links of the NPS that are
useful for this band of preservationeers.
