When our kids were little, i.e. elementary age, we asked them to draw a
map from our house to their elementary school 3 blocks away. I wish
we'd kept that up, as their perceptions were interesting, especially
noting the changes year to year. The idea was good, increasing an
awareness in their surroundings and the landmarks that identify their
sense of place. Both are now pretty-much grown, but have retained a
sense of place that is more developed than the average person, perhaps
due to our little exercise. I don't know... They are both definitely
anti-sprawl and anti-suburbs, but not necessarily pro-preservation.
That, too, will come, I believe, if we've done our job as
preservationists and parents.
