Ralph,

Is that one of those architectural details that lets out the bad spirits?

When I was a kid my stepfather rather loudly one day said I need
something like a hole in the head. Next day my neighbor, the one who
washes dishes in a deli in Ithaca for a career, hit me in the head
really good and solid with a rock. I have always since then been just a
little bit wary of pronouncements concerning holes in heads.
