Thank you for the unsolicited endorsement, Leland.

There is both an art and a science to color and color-matching. The science 
only gets you so far, then you have to let the eye and the artist tweak what 
the machinery has given you. The science side definitely helps on the issue of 
matches that look OK in the morning and not so much at noon, though. 

As for coating of terra cotta, I have seen it done most often in cases where 
the extent of damage to the glaze was severe. As Leland suggests, done in 
proper sequence, it does not have to leave you with a building that looks like 
it's been painted.
