Subject:	[BP] a question of money...

Dinghy Owner (DO) engaged Friendly, Laid-Back Workman (FLBW) to rebuild oak
rubrails on banged up 30 year old dinghy. Arrangement was the FLBW would
contact DO if costs rose above $300.00. Replacement dinghy of same size
costs perhaps $400.00. DO stated that he just used it at his dock in the
pond, nothing fancy, and he liked it that way.

FLBW now calls and says got "carried away, I just had to to it right"
rebuilt transom, refinished seats, etc. etc. all sorts of things that were
not called for and indeed are contrary to use of dinghy, which is left out
in weather, easily stealable, etc. FLBW admits he did not observe our
arrangement, expresses embarrassment, says that he has now expended $900
repeat nine c-notes in time, plus materials extra. Bought several
different woods until he found "the right one" for the rubrails. This far
exceeds value of dinghy, even partially "restored" - and the dinghy is still
quite distant from a restored condition, even at "$900".

FLBW is not hostile, just kind of vague, in a vineyard kind of way, and
"would like" to get $700 plus materials out of the deal. I told him he had
put me in a difficult position, did work contrary to the function of the
dinghy, etc. etc.

Sight unseen (how bad could someone screw up some rubrails?) I am inclined
to give him $400.00 and erase his name from my rolodex.

Unfair to FBLW? Christopher
