It seems pretty obvious that these were for ventilation (I'm wishing my
non-AC apartment had them in this heat -- even my transom lights are
painted and nailed shut!)  Any chance of checking some popular building
catalogs of the time?  I would think Sears, Montgomery Ward, or another
similar catalog retailer would have some ads...  Especially considering it
seems to be so widespread...

HEY!  I just noticed the new tag line "the place where the heavy
conservationists hang out" -- now, I know I've gained a couple pounds since
I moved back to the midwest, but must we advertise it!?!?!?  ;)
