Apropos your note and the recent discussion of Schermerhorn Row, I have
just
begun reading a book entitled Venice Rediscovered , by John Pemble (Oxford
University Press, 1996). He spends a good deal of the latter part of the
book
discussing the NUMEROUS attempts by many groups, to determine the levels
and
types of intervention to be effected on that city in the late 19th century,
and early 20th, once "Westerners" got over considering it an Oriental city,
and decided it worthy of apotheosis. Very eye opening. I recommend it.
Thanks
for your note.

It sounds like as good a place to begin filling the wide gaps in my
knowledge of architectural history as any. Thanks for the recommendation,
I'll look for it.
