Thanks for your response, Marilyn.  I'm surprised that Deadwood was
designated as an NHL in 1961.  The gambling designation is more recent.

Frankly, the town didn't look wierd in April, as it was still off-season
and relatively quiet.  There were no buses or large tour groups.

One development of interest is their recently completed huge parking
garage.  It was constructed one block behind the historic Main Street
facades, and used a false facadism to simulate another row of 3-story
brick buildings.  Apparently in season this still isn't enough, but it
must help some to keep cars off Main Street.

We went up to Lead to see the open pit mine and eat dinner...
