I have no empirical evidence as to whether this old wives tale works (because I strive mightily not to waste the precious elixir), but I've heard that you lift red wine stains from carpet by using white wine.

Sounds a little bit to me like the old wives tale that you chase a hangover by drinking more the morning after....
