I spent the weekend looking at some maple veneer paneling at the c. 1938 arm
air corps hanger at midway airport. The building is a great art deco hanger
with scalloped aluminum panels, limestone and buff brick. The original
aluminum windows have been replaced, unfortunately, but all in all the
building was tremendously in-tact, including the original fire supression
system (state of the art for 1938), original hanger doors and lots of other
cool stuff. The building is currently the home of the army air national
guard and they are having the c-bees over to restore the wood paneling in
the (most likley) original officers lounge. Myself and a woman from Chicago
Landmarks Commisiion are providing the scope of work and will walk-through
the repair techniques with the c-bees and then they will preform the work.
It is a lot of fun teaching them how and why to repair the orignal paneling.
