Metal ceilings (often not tin but sheet iron, painted) were installed for
decoration and also for fireproofing.  They were considered more hygienic
than plaster.  This shouldn't be much worse to clean than a plaster ceiling.
Also, the metal ceiling panels were usually nailed onto multiple furring
strips and are difficult to take down. Keep the ceiling, paint it. (As long
as I don't have to - my bedroom has been awaiting painting for 6 months, raw
plaster patches and all  -  with the blue walls and the white plaster
patches, we call it the cloud room)
