Ken,

One possibility for historic painting of brick is that the brick was so bad
that they painted it in the Olden Days (even before we were young) to protect
it from environmental racism.  Besides which the goddam paint might not come
out, in which case we need a good, historically correct, reason for leaving
it on, and doing an inexpensive paint analysis instead of a megabucks facade
stripping.
