Hooray! At last, one I can afford to travel to!

When you all are here in October, I will give you a three story ride in the
oldest operating open caged elevator on the continent at my curatorial home,
the Maritime Museum of BC. http://mmbc.bc.ca/experience/bird-cage-elevator/

It will be so weird to have faces instead of just names!

My first year on a fire lookout, I communicated by radio daily with the
nearest neighbour, a lookout 30 miles away. The knowledgeable woodsy voice
and style of speech suggested a wizened leathery lanky woods roamer and I
developed that picture of Pete in my mind. After a month, when I got my
first day off, I drove down the valley to Pete's lookout to say hello and
see the landscape from his point of view. There, I experienced the shock
of my life. Pete had set up a giant stuffed arm chair on a swivel platform
in his lookout home (in BC, most of us all lived right up in our 14' square
lookouts). Beside the chair was a table with binoculars, the portable
Forestry radio, and endless beer bottles. Pete was a giant round
pasty-skinned couch potato. He was cheery and friendly and we got on well
over the table and his homemade potato beer, but the rest of the summer I
had to live with two faces in mind every time the radio voice spoke to me.
It was as though Pete had become a split personality, but only split in my
mind, for he never knew it.

Ever since, I have been careful to avoid visualizations of faces I have not
yet met, but after all these years on BP, I am afraid some of you have
sneaked into mind-visual presence.
