What about the merit of making it clear to future generations just where
the original leaves off and the restoration/replacement begins?

Absolutely essential. 'Nugh said? Hardly.

One of the reasons that, in my antique restoration work, I try to avoid
working for dealers is that it is against their interest to have the work
that I do be apparent or documented. That state of affairs does not yet
exist in preservation work, and I hope it never does. An ethical nightmare.
