Okay, I take it back.

Tuesday night, I was at a concert of Bulgarian Gypsy music: the Yuri
Yunakov Ensemble with Ivo Papazov. I am assured by Those-Who-Know that
Papazov is the world's greatest clarinetist; and indeed, the audience of
about 250 included a panoply of prominent local musicians. Admittedly
11/16 and 9/8 Balkan rhythms are an acquired taste.

The event was held in the Ballroom of the Michigan Union, a 1920s sort-of
Collegiate Gothic edifice on the University of Michigan campus. Like most
everyone else there, I was up and dancing, and at one point ended up near
the fireplace at the north end of the room. Between songs, I peeked
inside, and noticed that part of the firebrick on the back wall of the
firebox was done herringbone style. Just as Ralph predicted!

Herringbone makes Mary Poppins' Flemish Bond imitation firebrick look
positively tame by comparison. As cinematic architectural gaffes go, it
certainly doesn't rank with Eastlake porches seen in a movie supposedly
set during the 1849 California Gold Rush.

So, in the words of Emily Latela, "never mind!"
