Then there's "Wicked: The Life & Times of the Wicked Witch of the West" by
Gregory Maguire. It tells the real story behind this perhaps unfairly
maligned witch, and isn't shy about delving into politics, sex, and
everything else you need to keep those pages turning. Turns out, Elphaba,
our heroine, was born green, with all her pointy teeth in place, which made
life hard for her mother.

Mr Baum wrote a book about Santa Claus, the title of which I
forget, which
was one of the most fanciful yarns I've ever read. Of
course I don't go in
much for that sort of thing so I haven't read many fanciful
yarns anyway.
