Ken-

I wasn't really volunteering as the shelter manager, I am sort of required to
do it for my job (by day she is a mild mannered historic preservation
specialist, by night... EmergencyGirl!)

I am quite sensitive to flood-related issues-- so forgive my querulousness. I
live in a town on the banks of the Delaware River, and our creeks and canals
regularly flood (I almost lost my car in the flood of '96). The town's tax
assessor, who is a friend of mine, has told me horror stories of some of the
flood damage-- houses twisted off their foundation, water halfway up the
walls...

This type of flooding isn't new here, and our town was well-prepared for
Floyd, unlike some of the surrounding communities that got absolutely SMACKED
by the 'cane. I guess at least some of the 4.5 MILLION (yes I wrote that
right!) that we are spending on flood mitigation to desnag the creeks is
actually working. Now if only we could stop new builders from construction in
the flood plain...
