I recently came across an HSR that describes the consolidation of a sandstone
cornice -- in order to save the historic fabric -- in which only the leading
edges of the cornice (the conveniently available portions) were consolidated
(technique and materials not specified), leaving a weaker stone further into
the cornice and as a result the newly made heavier sections of stone began to
break off in large chunks rather than in small flakes as it had previously
been doing. This over a tourist entrance. Possibly an interesting strategy to
force conservation over delayed maintenance? The next remedy was netting and
monitoring. Plan in future is to try to identify & locate the English
sandstone (quarried +/- 1730?) and replace missing elements with full
sections.

Any suggestsions as to whom may I contact re: a contemporary library of
English sandstones with it in mind to identify the availability of a
replacement stone?
