Candy;
 I would love to tell you about a few dates that were stone walls; and I was
wearing my best cologne"madness in the moonlight' but thats a nutter story;

Having worked on a few dry wall granite foundations in New England(New
Hampshire mostly) there is a few rules of thumb; which you already know
        clue #1 the stone often did not come far;...... look for quarrys talk
to the state geologist and the gravel guys then walk backwards to the nearby
colonial farms checking outcrops of stone; and most important the earliest
known churches.
          ..Clue 2# old maps always show interment boundrys(holy ground ) and
by tradition ( kings in Boston and Trinity and Salem come to mind) these
have distict boundries tree lines ;ditch mounds; corner property stones and
most important road beds to the gates when there are none to be seen now .
           Clue #3 Early farming communities had family plots not far from
the big house (if you died in winter they did not want to be stuck indoors
for a week) look across the fence; and date the surrounding property within
1/4 of a mile
           Clue #4 Stone thickness and evidence of feathers and plugs;
splitting techniques have changed little but the older somethimes the stouter
the stone;more irregular; larger and chunky the slab .....but do not bet the
farm on it..also look for long key stones to lock the wall and use of gravel
as "anchor pins"
             .Lastly and the most obvious whats the earliest known interment;
mark its location add 30 yrs and you can safely date your wall.
                   Now if you want to get esoteric read America B.C and the
mystrey hill Americas Stone Henge how phoenicians (kens people) arrived here
and built a colony in Conn? with a stone henge with lunar and solar
(Midwinter ) alignment using stone techniques not unlike your description ;
untl the indains got wise to them and sold them some beachfront property in
Fla. for 24$ to retire to
               come to think of it if you want to go new age ...get out the
diving rods (coat hangers will do ) align with your solar plexus(thats where
you get heart burn) and walk the ground focusing on ley lines and dates
...and if you strike oil (pack up the kids an move to Beverly..Hills that is
) ....or the cheap version is to douse with a hanging crystal (every
preservationist has one where do you think specs come from?) and walk the
ground asking weege board questions..
               if all this is confusing ask Ralph..but its a known billing
procedure handed down by stonemason to stonemason tru the lodge ..Im
surprized you didn't know..but then I can't give away all the secrets..... So
having said all this ...are you dating yet Best Michael
