From the National Park Service morning report Almanac for Sunday, July
     23--

     "On this date in 1885, Ulysses S. Grant died at Mt. McGregor, New
     York, four days after completing his memoirs."

     I just checked with the New York SHPO.  They said that most of Mt.
     McGregor is now a med/min security prison, surrounded by razor wire.
     The person I talked to said she hadn't really looked to see whether
     anything historic survived on the prison grounds.  The cottage where
     Grant died is still there and open to the publlic (you have to go
     through the prison grounds, showing IDs and leaving license plate
     number, etc.).  The site is small and the house modest, but it
     apparently has a lovely view.

     It's close to Saratoga.  Since I'm going to be up in the Adirondacks
     over Labor Day, I may go down to visit.  I find the story about Grant
     essentially staying alive to finish the memoirs that he hoped
     (accurately, as it turn out) would support his family after his death
     absolutely haunting.  Will be happy to report back.
