Building on the excitement generated by last years workshop in Frederick,
Maryland, the Preservation Trades Network is finalizing plans for the 1998
"Gathering of the Trades". The 2nd Annual International Preservation Trades
Workshop, IPTW-98, is a forum for serious individuals working as professionals
in the field of preservation. This is an opportunity for those who use their
backs and their hands, as well as their minds, to exchange experiences,
skills, and ideas, and to increase the visibility and recognition of the
trades within the preservation community.
Those who attended the first workshop can expect even more skilled
demonstrators, provocative round table discussions, product "challenges", and
opportunities to meet top practitioners of the preservation trades. If you
missed IPTW-97, prepare yourself for an event unlike any trade show or
conference you ever attended.
Last year the event was planned for a maximum of 325 people and attendance was
ultimately 371. Registration had to be closed 10 days prior to the start of
IPTW-98 due to interest having exceeded the capacity of the event. This year
PTN has planned for a maximum group of 500. This is accomplished by changing
the site where the event will be held and planning additional presenters.
However, due to the format, the event will not able to handle an unlimited
attendance. Too many people trying to be involved in a demonstration means
that some people will be at a disadvantage to view and or ask questions, so we
must keep participant to demonstrator ratio down. Due to this condition please
be sure to register early so as not to be denied this special opportunity.
Because IPTW-98 is designed by the trades, and for the trades, the principal
focus of the Workshop will be on the demonstration of craft skills and trade
techniques in areas such as:
Brick and stone conservation, concrete repairs, and lime mortar preparation
and application, Use of historic tools, historic millwork, epoxy repair
techniques, and wood identification and preservation, Timber framing, log
repairs, blacksmithing and hardware Historic roofing methods, windows, and
glazing Project documentation and architectural fragment collections, And much
more . . .

Three new areas of interest are being added this year. The first is a Business
Track that will feature speakers, panels, and round table discussions
covering; documentation, marketing/image, consulting, qualifications,
networking, liability, and personnel/education. The second is a topic not
normally covered at preservation conferences - Mothballing, Moving, and
Salvage of historic structures. The third is the inclusion of a Commercial
Space that will be available for product specific information and
demonstrations.
Another highlight of the workshop will be the keynote speakers including James
S. Askins, former National Park Service Preservation Specialist and first
Chief of the NPS Preservation Training Center and Clem Labine, Editor and
Publisher of the Traditional Building publication.

IPTW-98 will take place November 10-12, 1998, at the Montgomery County
Agricultural Center in Gaithersburg, Maryland. The Agricultural Center offers
covered space for intensive "hands on" sessions, easy access to the Washington
DC area, and ample lodging and nearby camping facilities. The cost for the
Workshop is $300.00 (PTN Member) or $350.00 (Non Member) for Registrations
received before September 10, 1998, and $325.00 (PTN Member) or $375.00 (Non
Member) after September 10, 1998.
