Or tin ceilings, which were imitations of molded plaster ceilings,
which presumably were imitations of classical stone originals.

Now there are plastic or fiberglass ceilings molded to imitate tin
ceilings, and on as above, to make a four-step progression:
plastic<tin<plaster<stone.

Even vintage-style "tin" ceilings available today are probably steel
or aluminum or something, rather than the original material.

I have also seen early 20th century metal siding molded to imitate
rough (convex) concrete blocks, which in turn were imitations of stone
blocks.

And modern latex paint is a preservationist-approved imitation of the
old oil-based lead paint.
