Wow, a message got thru! I better use the opportunity to say
something...the current topic appears to be photography. I like my
Nikon Coolpix 885, as well as the Nikon 5000 for the office. I just
took software training in PhotoShop 7.0 and finally learned how to
distort my digital photos to eliminate the parallax. That alone was
worth the two days of play out of the office. Many of the other
techniques will be useful in good time, but I loved the distortion and
cropping to fix my photos best.

My little Nikon is pocketable. I bought the wide angle lens, which is
great for tight spaces or panoramic views, but won't work with the
flash. I alternate charged batteries. I use the LCD viewer to tip the
camera and get as straight on a view as possible (before I learned my
PhotoShop tricks) and use the zoom to compose. I find it safest to put
the little guy in a cushioned bag that fits on a belt or purse strap.
The entire camera can be operated one-handed, not easy for lefties. If
I turn off the flash, it is hardly noticed in a crowd. The macro
feature is awesome - within inches completely in focus, if there is
enough light - for getting detail of cracks or color or whatever, then
zooming back to capture the context.

Slide shows are retro but easier to talk to. Needing to use both slides
and digital images means making the hard choice between scanning slides
to digital or saving digital to slides. Powerpoint can actually be fun.

Issues of archival quality and protection have not been addressed, but
we are getting advice to save to the following: 1-hard drive backup,
2-DVD, and 3-magneto optical disk ...in that order. Anyone doing that
yet???
