I think music quality has been dumbed down. You can get somewhat decent
sound for fairly low cost and for much of today's music that is fine. Back
in the analog days sound depth, character, and color were the goal, starting
in the sound studio to the home playback. However, audiophiles still chase
the same holy grail and spend serious money. Headphones are okay on the
subway but filling the right room with deep complex sound can not be beat
and you still need exceptional equipment to do it well. The physics of sound
have not changed and I don't think you can get the Dynaco or Hafler kits
anymore.

Eric - my house in the 4th year of renovation and Thorens turntable still in
boxes.

I have one of those old "completely manual" AR (Acoustics Research)
turntables (doesn't set the needle on the record or pick it up when it get
to the middle) that were popular among audiophiles back in the early 70s

So, we broke our necks finding the best sound systems then, remember? We
made people who collect Morgans look like amateurs. But now young people
just slap on an ipod, or listen to music over their (gulp!) computer
speakers!!! What happened? Has musical quality been dumbed down, or were
we wasting our time? Christopher
