Money, always about money
Insurance claim and a building owner trying to get the insurance company
to pay for cleaning and repointing the building sue to supposed soot
soiling on the facade. (The repointing is to keep the washing water from
infiltrating the bldg and that is a whole other story!)
We estimate testing would/could cost a lot less than the cleaning
otherwise there is the possibility of a lawsuit so we need very sound
test results.

Subject: Re: [BP] Fire Soot / Smoke Residue Testing

My simple suggestion: Just taste it. Curiosity is getting the better
of
me. If you can't even see any soot why is it so doggone important to
know
if there is any? Sounds darned expensive to find something you can't
see.

Does anybody have experience with testing for the presence of fire soot
or
smoke residue on masonry materials such as limestone? We are considering
trying Gas Chromatography Tests of alcohol wipes taken from a building
trying to determine if soot residue is present or not. There really is
no
visible presence of soot but we want to be sure. Any comments on GC
testing
or other methods would be appreciated.
