Newark Terminal "Taxies" To New Home

It's not unusual to see an airplane taxi from the terminal, but there aren't
many times you'll be able to see the terminal taxi away from the aircraft.
That's just what officials in Newark, N. J., did this past week with a
portion of their original art deco terminal, dedicated by Amelia Earhart in
1934. The structure, declared a national historic landmark, had to be moved
to make way for a runway extension. To do it required an army of people and
a battalion of hydraulic jacks. Over a two-week period, the wing-shaped
section was hoisted eight feet into the air by 29 hydraulic jacks. Forty
hydraulic dollies supported by 320 rubber tires were slipped underneath to
support the 2,000-ton wing and this past Wednesday the entire structure was
rolled inch-by-painstaking-inch three-quarters of a mile to its new location
in the airport's cargo area. The center section, which houses the world's
first air traffic control tower, and the other flanking section will be
moved early next year. That center section, at 5,000 tons, will be the
heaviest structure ever moved on rubber tires and should make it into the
Guinness Book of World Records. Once moved and put back together, the old
terminal will be used as part of the airport police and administration
building.
