Water/Smoke Test Leader

My inquiry to the specifier for the smoke and water test on the internal rain
leader resulted in direction to do something like pour 5-gallons of water in
the top and see if 5-gallons of water comes out the bottom. I'm a bit
perplexed by this as I have no idea how long it will take what unknown
quantity of water to drip down from the insides of the leader. I explained
that filling the leader with water to wait to see if it springs a leak may
not be prudent. Next step is for me to find a smoke machine... short of a
small bonfire I suppose I can come up with a squirrel cage blower, a candle,
and a handful of wet oak leaves mixed with dog shit. If we can't see the
smoke I can have our mechanics with radios running into rooms sniffing the
air. Possibly Mary Julip will lend us one of her porch pets? Did I mention
this is a courthouse?
