What are you & the boys interested in?

Beaches: See if Pajaro Dunes are public.
17 miles from Gilroy, on Monterey Bay.
We rented a beach house there for a week.
Wide sandy beach. Saw our first phalaropes.

Institutions: Stanford U at Palo Alto,
50 miles from Gilroy. Original quadrangle is
beautiful -- Shepley Rutan & Coolidge.

Shopping: Carmel Village, near Monterey City
and Asilomar. Cutesy as it gets.
Same day trip as Monterey & Asilomar.

Redwoods: On the peninsula, same day trip
as Stanford. Try Portola Valley & then
just drive around.

Architecture: Get the Guide to Architecture
in San Francisco and Northern California,
David Gebhard. Amazon supposedly has copies
for less than $2, must be old, but not out of date.
I always borrow it from the library
when I'm going out there.

Hearst Castle (also by Julia Morgan)
is 100 miles from Gilroy.

Berkeley is 80 miles in the other direction,
where you can see Maybeck.
The university campus is a little incoherent,
compared with Stanford, but has good stuff;
however, the Maybeck church just off campus
is world class. Some fine houses too.

So which category do you want more on?

Sign me, Wife is from Bay Area
& Best Friend is a professor at Stanford.
