Install a drop ceiling. That way you don't have to remove any dangly bits,
you don't have to tear anything out, Linda gets her new ceiling, tourists can
stick their head up in the tiles if they really want to see the construction
of the floor joists, and the ceiling is removable if future owners want to
put it back the way it was originally.

And it is probably a project you could do yourself... or be done by a
contractor that doesn't have a lot of specialized skills.

And if you need to run new wiring, you don't have to rip out all the drywall.
