"Grown up" is a terrible misnomer, a life illusion instilled by the big kids 
when you were still a little kid, a control issue that never changes, no 
matter how old you get in age.   Just when you reach the point of feeling as 
though you have served your apprenticeship, upper management pushes the 
Mandatory Retirement button.

For a really good read all about it, try the novel novel "The Discovery of 
Heaven" by the fascinating Dutch author, Harry Mulisch.
