Oh Derek, it's much worse than you imagined.....

once you're married, you not only can't buy books, you can't
READ them either, without getting comments like
"gee it must be nice to just sit around doing NOTHING while
I slave my fingers to the bone
taking care of these kids/building this garage"  (pick gender
appropriate response...)

one of my friends had the good sense and foresight to marry
someone who also loves to read.... but only one

all the rest complain that they have to retreat to various hiding
places around the house to get in anything much more than the
daily paper  (which seems to be allowed? but only in the bathroom )

in fact, one guy I know went down to the camp we frequent for a
weekend, SPECIFICALLY to finish a Tom Clancy novel he'd been
trying to get through for about a month   ;)
