Vermont Slate Productions

A bulletin issued by the census bureau on slate production shows that
Vermont is second in the list of states in the industry, and the total
value of its product in 1889 is put at $838,013, while for the whole
country it was $3,441,863. The whole number of quarries in the country is
206, of which Vermont has 60. Eleven other states and territories are in
the slate producing area, but among these only Maine, Maryland, New York,
and Pennsylvania report any considerable quantities. Pennsylvania does the
lion's share of the business, the total value of her product for the year
being put at $2,011,776.
