Cas Stachelberg at Higgins & Quasebarth ((212) 274-9468) has done quite a
bit of research on this subject. Also, you might want to check Jester,
Twentieth Century Building Material for a piece by Deitrich Neumann on
glass. Neumann also wrote a piece on prismatic glass for the now-defunct
Building Renovation magazine.

Subject: Glass block lights in sidewalk vaults


Anyone have a quik-n-EZ history reference on the use of glass blocks in
sidewalk vaults?  I know they're prevalent in NYC (in both sidewalk vaults
and at least one subway station that I've been through), but I found some
in the middle of North Dakota (!) and am wondering when they might have
been put in -- the building was originally a brick bank structure (1883),
but has been modified extensively.  Anyone doing restoration of these in
the Midwest?
