Along the coast of Maine, I've seen cotton duck canvas, sometimes new, 
sometimes made of old worn out ship's sales, painted with oil-based 
paints--whatever was on hand. Sometimes canvas simply treated with 
linseed oil and beeswax as was done for fishermens slickers.
