Back in the early '70s here in BC, some back-to-the-land backwoods
neighbours who were also serious mountain climbers decided to traverse a
nearby mountain chain. The three couples, all experienced backwoods
hikers, took off well prepared for the week long isolated wilderness
expedition but in the midst of the journey discovered a particularly
difficult climb up to the highest mountain plateau, the climb requiring
several days instead of the one day anticipated. This set them back in
their food supply, and they determined to live off the land as much as
possible to conserve in case of more slow-downs.

Up there in a little open alpine meadow, they discovered a vulnerable
ptarmigan and immediately attacked it, lit a fire and ate it, pleased with
their skills of survival in a difficult situation. What they didn't know
was that on the ridge overlooking the meadow was a group of bird watchers
who had helicoptered up the alpine unseen and unheard on the other side of
the ridge, all with binoculars trained collectively on the exposed
ptarmigan, enjoying the intimate and expensive view of wildlife when
suddenly a group of long haired bearded wild men emerged into the
binocularred view, pouncing on the innocent ptarmigan, ripping it apart,
roasting it and eating it right before their eyes! It was a shocking scene
for the helicoptered gentle naturalists.

Several days later, when the mountaineers made their final descent to the
road that was the end of their wilderness journey, they were met by
Government officials who served them Summonses for court cases. The debate
between which group was making more of an environmental impact, helicopters
or desperately hungry hikers, didn't go far with the Judge, and they had to
pay substantial fines for killing a wild thing while approaching starvation
in a place seen by few humans before.

Note: bc is not the same as bh (before helicopters)
