Tile Heritage Society, Healdsburg, California. Don't remember the name of
the chap who runs this organization, but found him enormously helpful
several years ago when looking for arcane info on tile. But, then again,
there is probably a lurking tile-guru on BP who can provide an instant and
certainly more satisfying answer.

Since you mentioned "material culture" in your post I'll address this to
you, but please any other listers with knowledge do jump in.

I'm trying to find solid sources on the history of ceramic tile used for
residential fireplace surrounds and in bathrooms around 1900.  Any leads
would be much appreciated.
