"In the US this [yellow pine] generally refers to Pinus palustris more generally refered to as pitch pine, southern pitch pine or occasionally as longleaf yellow pine.

P palustris belongs to an anatomically (ie wood anatomy) indistinguishable
group that contains P.taeda (loblolly pine) P. echinata (shortleaf pine),
P.elliottii (slash pine), P.banksiana (Jack pine), and the much darker
featured P caribaea (caribbean pitch pine) and P. oocarpa (also caribb.
pitch pine).

In the UK, yellow pine is technically restricted to Pinus stobus, but the
widespread application of the name to the taeda group is commonly accepted.

My main point of reference is BS7359:1991 (Commercial Timbers including
sources of supply )."
