I once knew Kokamo, a brown Chesapeak dog, whose sole mission in life was
clearing the bottom of our ponds and creeks of stones and other debris. Every
weekend we would arrive at our country place (Grampa's Woods, between Lincoln
and Omaha) to find the shores lined with stones, etc. His master-feat was
dredging up a whole concrete block from a water depth of at least 18 feet. His
teeth were also worn down. He received the county's Earth Day enviornmental
preservation award two years running. He was very helpful when my dad and I
began reclaiming walnut logs from the bottoms and banks of the creeks. He
would swim the ends of our cables under logs, retreive tools dropped in the
water and visiously guard logs left on the bank from the tree poachers. We
thought about outfitting him with custom SCUBA gear, but he could stay down
for three minutes on his own so we dropped the idea.
