Interesting NYT piece today by Eric Lipton about the collapse of a parking
structure (Oct. 30) under construction in Atlantic City.

The pace of the project was plainly rushed beyond the curing capacity of
concrete -- they were in a BIG hurry to get the thing done.

The story sounds a whole lot like the Kansas City hotel walkway collapse a
few years back: construction workers noticed the problems, but their
questions and warnings were brushed off by higher-ups.

> "Somebody didn't do their jobs: the architects, the engineers, the
> foremen," John Pietrosante said. "And now my brother and three other

Somehow, I don't imagine that the responsible parties rushed home to lock
themselves in bathrooms in desperate suicide attempts, like some ferryboat
pilot.

I presume that Atlantic City is second to none in local government
corruption. Wanna bet they never showed up to inspect the place at all?
