Ruth,

The paint could be peeling due to moisture infiltration (you would be able to tell pretty easily if the paint is bubbling or powdery, or if you can see corrosion on the tin), or the adhesion could be failing from a combination of paint build-up and flexural stressing resulting from temperature cycling.

As far as specialists/professionals, you can try the AIC website and click on "Find a Conservator" to locate an architectural or paintings conservator in your area: http://www.conservation-us.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=Page.viewPage&pageId=495&parentID=472. You might also consider a historical architect. It is likely that you will need to remove a substantial amount of paint that is likely to contain lead. An architect can help you find qualified contractors.

We had a large project where we had to completely remove multiple paint layers from a historic tin ceiling. We found a good contractor who was able to remove the tin panels without damaging them, and then removed the paint be freezing the panels and "popping" the paint off.

Hope this is helpful.

Mary

Subject: [BP] Paint specialist

Hi Gang, Is there a paint specialist on this list? I seem to recall such.
If so I need paint help.

I'll try to make this short, in a round about sort of way. Putney
Historical Society has been given an old church building, which has A LOT
of problems, of course. There are groups of musicians who are using the
former sanctuary for performances. One of the MANY problems there is the
paint on the tin ceiling is peeling off in large pieces. We know the roof
needs attention, etc. but also are wondering if there might be other causes
of peeling paint. What sort of profession would we call on to give a full
assessment of the problem? There are structural engineers, electrical
engineers, etc. ad nauseum, so, are there paint engineers and if so how
would I find one at least semi-locally? Thanks for any help you can
suggest, Ruth
