There certainly are insects that prefer the soft dark woody areas in
and around the bark.  Most wood destroying critters prefer soft, dark,
warm and damp.  Some critters are drawn to other critters.  Rot is a
critter that attracts other critters.  But, there sure are plenty of
examples of timbers spanning basements/cellars with lots of bark left
in place.

I agree.  I don't thing its a good idea to invite critters that eat
wood into your home.

The big dog loves wooden clothespins...she likes to chew on lots of
stuff, but wood is favored.  She likes to chew the fingers off gloves
too.  Especially my wifes.
