From my days working in ceramics, I know that minerals in the clay body flux at different temperatures and, at high heat, some of those minerals will flare to the surface and through the glaze and vitrify in the glaze  Martin, your high fire thought is consistent with this. 

When you all talk about bricks, I like it.
