Here's the first coupla paragraphs from a piece I wrote about gravel drives:

'THE RETURN OF THE GRAVEL DRIVEWAY

        Driveways and paths provide some serious pitfalls for the restorer
of old houses. Even those people who do a wonderful job on the building
itself can make disastrous mistakes by using unsuitable materials on the
driveways and paths.
        The fact is that, when it comes to the crunch, there is little to
beat good old-fashioned gravel. After many years in which concrete and
paving bricks were dominant, gravel is making a comeback on the drives and
pathways of old houses.'
