I know that sick feeling. I got it back in the late 1980s (when my knees
started hurting at least once a month from hauling timbers, climbing
scaffolding, etc.) and I realized I wasn't going to be able to live out my
dream as a life-long tradesman. That's when I started the publication
series, so I'd have something more to market than my time and my body. It
was a good thing too, by 1993 I had blown out my knees completely. Since
then I have not been able to move myself more than a mile a day on my own
feet. 14 years later the publication series isn't giving me a whole living,
but it does make a significant contribution. The doctors are talking about
operating on my knees, but I can still get around normally enough to do a
few hands-on projects and keep up with consulting. I can see the day when I
can only go on projects where there's an elevator in the scaffolding--that,
or I'll get me one of those high-tech jet-powered back-packs.
