Ken,
Excellent story. There's no place like home. You remember when we were
working on Scroll and Keys? Actually found the little 4x7 inch Masonry
spec. book, signed by Richard Morris Hunt, after the many inputs from
conservators. The one thing that was not in the book was the brown clay
backer and the almost 100% lime, pink mortar. So curious as it was such an
important part of the variegated look and matched the granite bases and
capitals. Wish I'd copied it.
Best,
Leland

Leland,

I am reminded of the Church of the Ascension in Brooklyn, Williamsburg,
associated with the builder of the USS Monitor. We wanted to match the
aggregate in the mortar which was a dark sand, not like the predominant
yellow sand found on the remainder of Long Island (keep in mind Brooklyn
is on Long Island). So we were buying sand at $25.00 a bag from NJ. That
also meant we had to send someone to drive out to NJ to get the bags of
sand. We were fortunate that we did not need a whole lot of sand, and
costs and logistics like this help to restrict repointing to 'as needed'
rather than the occasional recommendation of wholesale 100%. Later in
the project a plumber had to do an excavation and we found all of the
wonderful perfectly matching dark sand under our feet.
