Those old-timers were smart.  

Unfortunately this can't always be done in The Big Stone Village what with their row houses.  I guess a lot of the row houses have the roofs sloped only to the rear but that results in a flat pitch and a big snow load.  Or they have a shallow pitch to roof drains and end up with the dreaded "flat roof" (no snow shed off the side except that that collects on the parapet walls to the point that it falls over).

You're supposed to put the doors on the END of the house, not the SIDE.
There are four doors in this house and they are all on the ends.  That way
the snow doesn't slide off and hit you or trap you inside.  Ruth

I think Bruce is right, and I don't shovel the stuff as often as I should.

The VT slaters said the way THEY detail roofs up Nawth is with a flat strip
(I forget what it's called, of course) running along the eaves so the snow
doesn't form ice dams OR get stuck-- it just falls off.   And if you have
half a damn brain, you keep the walkways and driveways the hell away from
areas where the snow -- and rain--is going to fall.

That's called good design.
