Just another anecdote confirming my belief that the world is full of folks
that have more money than have good sense.

When I bought my way-cool and unique to Raleigh 1926 California-style Arts
and Crafts bungalow (now a designated Raleigh Historic Landmark, by the
way, thank you very much), it was a wreck of deferred maintenance and
ill-advised additions.  I knew it would take many monies to rehab it.  The
price I paid was more than it was worth, considering its needs, but it was
close enough to fair that I went ahead and did it.  I was negotiating with
the estate, and I knew that if we didn't close the deal, it would go out
on the market and get snapped up by somebody that could afford far more
than I, with the tremendous risk that they would have the financial
resources to really screw it up.  I couldn't let that happen.

So I earned the opportunity to scrape grout joints to the top of the
Eiffel Tower.
